Bright medium brick red with toffee-hued rim. If the Erste Lage red from this vineyard followed the vegetal path, the Grosses Gewächs fully banks on fruit. Blackcurrant is on display in all its versions from the fragrance of its buds right down to intense cassis aromas. My hopes that the fruit should not dominate the flavour quite as much were not disappointed, as tasteful notes of chocolate and tobacco add complexity. Full bodied, quite dry and with a fair measure of astringency this Grosses Gewächs has the potential for further refinement.
